A man in Minnesota ice fishing.

One of the more popular winter activities in Minnesota is ice fishing. It’s a peaceful activity that can give you some peace or valuable time to catch up with an old friend. Reeling in a potentially big catch is also a lot of fun. If you are an angler looking for a new place to explore or want to drop a line on the ice and take part in attractions other than fishing, you’ll find that Northern Minnesota is the perfect place. A central location for fun winter activities and ice fishing in Northern Minnesota is Poplar River Condos at Lutsen

Areas For Ice Fishing Near Lutsen, Minnesota

Minnesota is a premier ice fishing destination. While we are next to Lake Superior, you must look inland for your ice fishing opportunities. There are several small lakes where you should find some luck this winter.

Caribou Lake

Caribou Lake is not far from Lutsen and has a unique shape that appeals to those looking for a secluded spot to fish. Its deepest point is about 30 feet, and the lake covers more than 720 acres. Fish reported in the lake include Bluegill, Largemouth Bass, northern pike, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, and Yellow Perch.

Gunflint Trail

Some of the best ice fishing in the state is found in the Boundary Waters, which is about an hour north. You’ll find lots of excellent places for Trout fishing, and one of those places are the many lakes off the Gunflint Trail. The trail will give you more than 50 miles of paved road to several lakes in the area–typically with nearby parking by the lakes.

North Shore Outfitters

If you are new to the area, you should seek out an outfitter along the North Shore. This is a great place for finding a charter, advice, and supplies for any outdoor activity during winter (or any season).

In Grand Marais is the outfitter North Shores Outdoors. You’ll find more than 40 years of experience when it comes to fishing in Northern Minnesota. They provide inland fishing trips to Sawbill, Caribou, Gunflint, and Arrowhead trails inside and outside the Boundry Waters.

If you travel south of Lutsen, in Tofte, you will find Sawtooth Outfitters. They are a year-round outfitter and offer various rentals, such as skis, snowshoes, stoves, and other winter camping equipment.
