Back in April, a devastating fire destroyed three iconic Grand Marais businesses. Among these was The Crooked Spoon Cafe. Since April, we’ve anxiously awaited word of what was to become of this much-loved restaurant. Last weekend, the answers finally came! The City of Grand Marais caught its first glimpse of the future of The Crooked Spoon: The Crooked Spoon Food Truck!
No, the building was not rebuilt. Sadly, the beautiful sign that once hung above the door to the restaurant greeting diners was not salvaged from the wreckage of the building. However, the food truck is a welcomed sight for sore eyes in downtown Grand Marais. It marks a brighter future for the empty lots that stand where the three destroyed buildings once stood. The white food truck can be spotted near the corner of Wisconsin Street and 1st Avenue West.
Owners Sara and Nathan Hingos made the decision to transition to a food truck model over the summer, and have been working hard to get things up and running ever since. The Crooked Spoon Food Truck officially opened on Saturday, much to the delight of Grand Marais visitors and locals alike. If frequent lines in front of the truck are any indication, the food is as good as ever!
Menu
The menu will vary slightly each day, based on food availability, and so far we’ve seen a buffalo chicken sandwich, yker burger, steamed rice bowl, pork fried rice, creamy mushroom soup, cheese curds, and more grace the menu. From all accounts seen on Facebook over the weekend, the food at the Crooked Spoon Food Truck is just as amazing as the food in the restaurant was.
Hours
According to owner Sara, the hours of operation this winter will vary. Depending, primarily, on the weather. For instance, visitors to Grand Marais can enjoy a Crooked Spoon Food Truck meal today (Friday, December 11)! However, the truck will close over the weekend and reopen on Tuesday, December 15. They may also not be able to remain open at all once winter officially sets in near the Grand Marais Harbor. For the hours of operation, check out The Crooked Spoon Facebook Page. Openings will be subject to change based on the weather through the winter months. They plan to be open more often, with set hours, in the summer of 2021.
